On Sunday mornings people in Ghent go in droves to this square to buy flowers and gulp down a tasty helping of oysters at a seafood stall. Flowers, especially azaleas and begonias, are the pride and trademark of the area and they are celebrated every five years in the huge exhibition Floraliën. A flower market has in fact been held here since 1772. It is not surprising that there are sculptures of flower petals all over the Kouter, and if you look carefully you will see the old Dutch name of the flower concealed in the veins. You will recognise all the flowers in the altarpiece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
In addition the Kouter is the last resort for someone looking for a cash machine that still works or for an underground parking space.
