Vishallen
( Highly Recommended ) This once bustling historic building is now in danger of being lost forever because it is standing empty. The fish market has lost its purpose since no fish have been taken out of the River Leie, let alone sold, for more than a century due to the poor, polluted, quality of the water. In 1998 the building was the subject of a fierce argument. A plan to replace it with a modern glass construction was forwarded, but this was opposed on the grounds that it would have looked out of place beside the old architecture. Half the city took to the streets, demanded a referendum and again that well-known Ghent stubbornness came to the fore. The glass construction was put on ice, and the old fish market is still standing, awaiting its destiny. The best-preserved section is the huge entrance on the St Veerleplein, where there is a sculpture representing the confluence of the Leie and the Scheldt.
