Vooruit is called 'the bastion of socialism' and between the two world wars it certainly was. Later this art nouveau palace was abandoned to its fate in a pathetic condition. At one point it was close to being demolished until, in 1982, a group of young people joined forces and turned this glorious former meeting place into a true cultural centre. It was not long before Vooruit became a concept in the world of the performing arts.
All the big rock bands, theatre companies and authors tread the boards in the Vooruit cultural centre, and glittering parties take place in the ballroom. The foyer - in spite of having the appearance of a bleak refectory - is a pleasant place to meet.
