The ideological opposite of the Catholic cemetery Campo Santo is the Westerbegraafplaats near the Ghent- Bruges Canal. This became the last resting place for the free thinkers and unbelievers and earned the nickname 'beggars' graveyard'. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that the authorities gave permission for the consecration of several graves. Of the many famous people buried here the most notable ones are writers: Cyriel Buysse, Virginie Loveling, Johan Disse and the composer of the Flemish national anthem, Karel Miry.
