Although it would be difficult to find a smaller house in the city Tolhuisje is not actually the smallest. This little house, now a tavern, was actually built in 1700 in a small alley that was intended to make the Leie easier to reach as a source of water in case of fire. A similar fire alley is still visible and connects the Graslei with the nearby Korenmarkt. This is where the skippers had to pay their tolls. Interestingly, every year the management of the toll house was changed to guard against the chance of corruption and favouritism making their way into the system.
