Gildehuis Van De Wijnhandelaars
(
Highly Recommended
)
In 1755, during the time French fashion was followed to the letter all over Europe, this guild house was built for wine merchants
in the style of Louis XV. It stands in the part of the harbour where cranes were used, hence Kraanlei, 'Crane Lane'. You can
make out the old wine cellars just above the water from the bridge or from a boat. The wine barrels could be taken directly
from the boats. On the opposite side of this building was the beer quay; the pub is called Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant ('The
Waterhouse on the Beer-side'), and still has the wooden hatches into the beer cellars. The house is now a Mexican restaurant.
