In the 12th-century port city, grain was an important commodity and even now Ghent has one of the biggest grain storage areas in Europe. After the corn had been unloaded and stored in the Spijker on the Graslei it was offered for sale in the corn market. Nowadays the square is one of the two nerve centres for trams running to and from St Pietersstation, and one of the best places on sunny days to relax at a pavement café and watch the world go by. Try looking up: the first floor of a pub or shop is more likely than the ground floor to show that this is a beautiful example of a former aristocrats house.
