Mammelokker
(
Worth Seeing
)
Mamme in Dutch means 'breast' and mammelokker means 'suckling'. When the Cloth Hall was used as the city jail the small annexe
to the Belfort was the jailer's house. Above the gateway there is a sculpture of a woman suckling a bearded man. The story
behind this image is less erotic that at first appears. The man is Cimon who was condemned to starve to death, but was kept
alive by his daughter Pero who came every day to suckle him. The jailers were so touched by this scene that they set the man
free.
