The most picturesque route from the Vooruit Arts Centre to the Opera house is undoubtedly along the Ketelvest, a canal that was excavated in the 11th century. According to some people it is the foundation of an old city wall that was filled with water. In any case there are different opinions as to the origin of the Ketelvest. Certainly there was a city gate at the end of the canal. You can still feel the dark, oppressive atmosphere as described by authors such as Maeterlinck: the St Barbaracollege, where the future Nobel Prize-winner was educated, is situated on this canal. Behind several 18th-century houses the water flows past a modern cable bridge. The huge stage-sets for operatic productions are taken into the opera house across this bridge.
