Geeraard De Duivelsteen
(
Highly Recommended
)
This is a name that fires the imagination but its origin is unclear. It is thought that Geeraard Vilain, after whom the building
is named, was probably dark-skinned and so was referred to as 'the devil' (duivel is Dutch for devil). It is a beautiful
building and also one of the oldest in the city. Unfortunately it is not possible to visit the crypt. This large, dark vault
would otherwise have become a great tourist attraction and could certainly have inspired the author Umberto Eco. During the
buildings history it has served as a house of correction, a prison, an armoury and an orphanage, and it is now currently in
use as the National Archive. For small children it remains a grim castle, perfect as a setting for stories of ghosts and
witches.
