Coupure
(
Highly Recommended
)
As an inland port, Ghent has been preoccupied with establishing a good connection with the sea. In the 18th century the Coupure
was dug to connect the city with the Bruges-Ostend canal. The quays immediately became places where the burghers and rich
industrialists strolled or came to live: simple workers were forbidden to even show themselves here. Many of the burghers'
houses are still reflected in the Coupure and the percentage of French-speaking residents is higher here than elsewhere in
Ghent. You can wander along the canal admiring the beautiful facades of the houses and soaking up the atmosphere.
