Koninklijke Nederlandse Schouwburg
(
Highly Recommended
)
This beautiful building provided a home for the Dutch theatre in strongly 'frenchified' Ghent. It is still the permanent base
of the Ghent Dutch Theatre (Nederlands Toneel Gent). Outside a monument to Jan Frans Willems, founder of the Flemish Movement,
watches over the building in all its glory. We see an allegory of a mother suckling her children with the words of the Flemish
national anthem and figures from the medieval animal epic Reynaert de Vos (Reynard the Fox). From the terrace there is a lovely
view of St Baafsplein and you can go there for food and drink, although not directly before a performance .
