The house where the flamboyant Mrs Temmerman sold her typical Ghent sweets has a unique 17th-century gable on which the seven works of mercy are depicted. Anyone who has had to learn them by heart will probably still recognise them. It will perhaps take longer to find the work of mercy 'Burying the dead' and the passer-by can count only six. Look for the solution on the roof which is surmounted by an urn. The house stands companionably next to another attractive gable, De Fluitspeler (Flute Player) which displays an allegory of the five senses depicted in terracotta. Looking at a house like this can sometimes reveal interesting puzzles.
