After the death of two children from the Alyn family in 1354, the Rijm brothers escaped the death penalty by building a place of worship as an act of penance and other buildings followed. The city bought the buildings in 1940 and nowadays they house the Museum voor Volkskunde (Folk Museum) where you can get a glimpse of old trades and crafts. Children love the puppet plays of Pierke Pielarla. Pierke makes jokes in the Ghent dialect for young and old. His name is taken from the famous playwright Luigi Pirandello. In the 'Little Café' in the garden of the old hospital you can drink gin in a pub of the kind that Flanders had by the thousand before World War II. (Some Flemish villages had one pub per seven households.) Recently there seems to have been a change in the museum's policy and sometimes the management puts on thematic exhibitions.
