The University of Ghent has moved all over the place in the course of its history and even now the various faculties are scattered about the city and some are still on the move. The senate house in Volderstraat dates from 1816, when the teaching was still in Latin. If you have the opportunity do visit the staircase and the semi-circular senate hall; it is highly decorated, a proud monument to neo-classicism. The university reached its heyday in the 1930s when the Ghent students were taught for the first time in their mother tongue, Dutch. In the year 2000 this building hit the headlines when the artist Jan Fabre covered it with ham.
