No, this is not New York, where some nationalities have their own city within a city, but by analogy the Turkish community in Ghent has given the name 'Turkishtown' to their area. This is in the neighbourhood of Sleepstraat where many ethnic minorities run restaurants, manage a hammam (Turkish bath) or run a carpet shop. Yet not everyone uses the name Turkishtown because it would encourage the ghetto mentality and hinder integration in the city. Besides, the Belgian individuals who live in Sleepstraat are not disregarded. But anyone who wants to have a Turkish kebab, or buy apple tobacco for his narghile, or peppermint tea, knows where to find them.
