St Niklaaskerk

( Do not miss )

Each guild had its own patron saint and church. St Niklaaskerk was the sailors' church and many people think it is the most beautiful of all the 59 churches in the city. Building work began in 1200, the heyday of the Scheldt Gothic style. From the tower you have a wonderful view of the building which is lit up with green light at night. It is amazing to see so much light in the church building itself because this is unusual in the Low Countries. At the beginning of 1900 little shops were built against the church walls but they were demolished because of the 1913 Ghent World Fair. You can still find traces of them in Klein Turkje street. There have been discussions about whether to re-create the picturesque little buildings in the street scene or leave it as it stands.
