St Michielskerk

( Do not miss )

If you are not going to attend the celebration of the Eucharist in St Michael's Church you need read no further. The church is closed except for the liturgy in an attempt to keep the treasures, including Christ on the Cross by Antoon van Dyck, out of the hands of evil-intentioned visitors. The parish seems to have learned its lesson from the iconoclasm of 1566 and does not want to have to pick up the pieces again.
St Michael is the patron saint of the brewers. Medieval brewers each sold about 400 litres of beer per head of population annually so the coffers of their guild were well filled. The brewers wanted to use their pennies to build the largest church in Belgium in a symbolic gesture against the other guilds. They wanted to crown their church with a soaring 130m high tower. The mere 24m stump that you see today demonstrates that they had seriously underestimated the cost of the project. The Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp remains the largest church in Belgium.
