The actual Roeland Bell was destroyed by Emperor Charles V when the people of Ghent refused to pay their war taxes. This was no small loss because it meant that they had lost their fire alarm. The proper name for the bell which is now known as the Roeland Bell is 'The Great Triumph' and it was removed from the Belfort in 1914. The first attempt to sound the bell electrically caused it to crack. Local school children on visits to the bell are always asked to find the crack. You too can try. On Flemish National Day (11 July), when the Flemish Community Festival takes place, the bells can be heard all over the city; there is a verse about them in the Flemish national anthem which was written by a Ghent man.
