Metsershuis
( Do not miss ) The plans for the guild house for the masons, which had disappeared without trace, have been found in the archives. Because the 16th-century Renaissance house with scrolled gables was so beautiful a copy was built on the Graslei. During restoration work on a house in Cataloniëstraat in the 1980s, a builder found that there was another gable behind the facade: this was the original masons' house. It has now been completely restored and if you compare the copy with the original you will see that the imitators built one storey too many. The group of statues Moorish Dancers stands on top of the Metserhuis. When Emperor Charles V had conquered the Moors in Tunis a dance was introduced into Flanders celebrating this victorious battle. The official sculptor was Walter van Buck, also the founder of the Ghent Festivals, and with luck you will see these images actually move. Address: Cataloniëstraat 1 Restaurant: Chez Jean (Moderately priced) Bus: Tram 21, 22, 40, 41, 42; bus 3, 16, 17, 18, 19, 38 Other: St Niklaaskerk |
