St Pietersabdij

( Highly Recommended )

There was already an abbey on this site in 630 and it was to become the richest in the district. But in the turbulent Flanders of the 16th century the iconoclasts destroyed the building completely. A century later, as the spirit of the Counter Reformation blew through the Arteveldestad, St Pietersabdij rose again, larger and more impressive than before. That is until the country fell into French hands because then the clergy were chased out of the abbey and the building became a military barracks. The actual church building has best survived the damage and, as well as the memorial to Isabella of Austria, it contains a number of other treasures. Important exhibitions are held here regularly, you can visit the school museum and the abbey contains the Centrum voor Kunst en Cultuur (Centre for Art and Culture).
