Downstream from the Stock Bridge, the Water of Leith walkway will lead to you to one of Edinburgh's more picturesque corners, a cluster of streets of artisans' houses tucked away at the foot of the New Town heights. Here you will find the 11 parallel rows of terraced houses known as The Colonies, running at right angles to the Water of Leith. This development was constructed by the Edinburgh Co-Operative Building Company in 1861 for local workmen and their families. Each house is divided into upper and lower dwellings, with outside stairs to the top flats and tiny gardens. Many houses are decorated with plaques depicting the tools used by the tradesmen involved in their construction - masons, plumbers, joiners, plasterers and decorators.
