Waterloo Place
(
Worth Seeing
)
Waterloo Place is the continuation of Princes Street to the east, a superbly balanced example of grandiose neo-classical architectural
design. If you're hurrying through on your way to Calton Hill, pause to admire the rhythm of the soaring façades of its buildings.
Waterloo Place runs through the Old Calton cemetery; here are buried some of the major figures of the Scottish Enlightenment
such as the philosopher David Hume, and there's a fine view back to the castle. More prosaically, the bottom of the place
gives access to the St James Centre, a hideous block-like concrete structure housing a wide range of shops. The public outcry
following its construction probably did more than anything else to further the cause of conservation during the early 1970s.
