Scottish National Portrait Gallery
(
Worth Seeing
)
The imposing red sandstone bulk of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery looms over the east end of Queen Street. Built in
the 1880s, it's worth a visit for the interior alone, with its wonderful arcaded entrance hall glittering with lustrous murals.
The entire collection is devoted to the Scots, though not all the portraits are by Scots. You can trace the flow of Scottish
history and achievement through this diverse collection, though most people head straight for Mary, Queen of Scots, Nasmyth's
portrait of Robert Burns and Raeburn's Sir Walter Scott. Modern Scots to look out for include Jean Muir, the fashion designer,
Sean Connery, alias James Bond, and Irvine Welsh, the author of Trainspotting.
