The western suburb of Murrayfield, all terraces and villas, was developed around 18th-century Murrayfield House in the 1860s. It's a comfortable, well-to-do area with good local amenities and easy access both to the city centre and the green slopes of Corstorphine Hill. Twice a year Murrayfield comes into its own as crowds pour out from town to Murrayfield Stadium, the home of Scotland's international rugby union team, where home games are played during what is now (2000) the Six Nations championship. The stadium, vastly extended and modernised over the years, was built in 1925 by the then Scottish Football Union. The first game was played in March that year, when Scotland beat England 14-11.
