Tucked away in the quiet, leafy streets of Morningside on the southwest side of Edinburgh are solid Victorian villas still housing the prosperous citizens of Edinburgh's middle classes. Morningside, its respectability the butt of countless jokes, is one of several suburbs developed in the 19th century for the growing bourgeoisie, who wanted to live neither in the cold grandeur of the New Town nor the increasing squalor of the Old. The area is approached via `Holy Corner', the affectionate local name for a crossroads surrounded by no less than four churches. Morningside, with its good shops, services and local amenities, has all a suburb could wish for; a stroll round here provides that insight into local life which is often so hard to find in major cities.
