Edinburgh Castle Museums

( Highly Recommended )

Besides its ramparts, batteries, courtyards and fine buildings, Edinburgh Castle also houses some interesting museums, mainly connected with Scotland's military past. Though not strictly a museum, the Scottish National War Memorial draws thousands of visitors to admire its austere splendours. Designed by Robert Lorimer in 1924, it first commemorated the more than 100,000 Scots who died in World War I. Near by is the Scottish United Services Museum, a military museum devoted to the uniforms and equipment of the armed forces in Scotland. Sections are devoted to the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force; there are no less than nine Victoria Crosses on display, together with a mass of paintings, photos and general military ephemera. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, Scotland's only cavalry regiment, have their own separate museum, with exhibits covering their 320-year history.
