Royal High School
(
Worth Seeing
)
Many visitors wonder about the monumental building, visible from many parts of the city, that once housed the Royal High School.
This huge Greek Doric edifice was designed by Thomas Hamilton in 1829 - he based his plan on the Temple of Theseus in Athens.
In 1976 the building was converted into a debating chamber destined to house the new Scottish Parliament. That year the referendum
turned down devolution; when it came in 1999, the government rejected the school and chose a site at Holyrood for the new
parliament building.
