Calton Hill
( Do not miss ) A clutch of remarkable monuments adorns the slopes of Calton Hill (108m), another remnant of the volcano which formed Edinburgh's geological structure. The view from the hill's summit is splendid, with all Edinburgh spreading around and sweeping vistas down the coast and across to Fife. For even wider views, climb the 143 steps to the top of Nelson Monument, built in 1807, and housing a timepiece in the shape of a white ball which drops from a mast each day at 1pm. Next to it looms the unfinished National Monument; modelled on the Parthenon in Athens, it was intended as a memorial to the Scots who fell in the Napoleonic Wars. Only twelve columns had been completed when the money ran out and it was known for years as `Edinburgh's Disgrace'. The City Observatory, with its Gothic tower and astronomical dome, stands near by; the grandiose Playfair Monument commemorates John Playfair, first president of the Astronomical Institution.
