Stand with your back to the entrance to St Giles Cathedral and move about twenty paces forward and slightly to your right. At your feet you'll see the outline of a heart laid out in cobblestones. This is the Heart of Midlothian, which marks the place of the old Tolbooth prison, where executions took place. If you really want to feel like a local, it's customary to spit on the spot.
