It's well worth walking up the Lothian Road and along the West Approach Road to take a look at the £350-million-plus development known as the Edinburgh Exchange, the new financial district. The development plan was launched in 1988, after the construction of the palatial Sheraton Grand on what was then the rather run-down lower reaches of the Lothian Road. A clutch of buildings has gone up, centred around the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, opened in 1995 and designed by Terry Farrell. Building continues but the existing monuments to late 20th-century commerce, all soaring brick, stone and glass, are impressive enough. Worth noticing are the Standard Life building on the Lothian Road, with its fine gates and railings, and the impressive Scottish Widows building on Morrison Street.
