St Giles Cathedral, the High Kirk of Edinburgh, dark and atmospheric, dates mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries. The oldest parts of the church are the four massive columns surrounding the Holy Table in the crossing; these support the central lantern, with its flying buttresses and spire, raised in 1500. The original cruciform church was widened by the construction of extra chapels; the choir, which dates to 1419, is among the finest pieces of medieval architecure in Scotland. Another highlight is the Thistle Chapel, an exquisite Gothic Revival masterpiece designed by Robert Lorimer in 1909 for the knights of the chivalric Order of the Thistle. St Giles was John Knox's church; here he preached until his death in 1572, struggling to establish Presbyter-ianism as Scotland's faith during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. Here too, the religious disturbances of 1637 began when the new Prayer Book, similar to the English Prayer Book, was introduced; this led to the signing of the National Covenant abolishing Episcopacy.
