Spare a few moments as you walk down the Royal Mile to admire the Mercat Cross outside St Giles, one of the most evocative symbols of Edinburgh. Today's version dates from the 1880s and is modelled on the 17th-century cross; it was restored in 1970 and again in 1990, when the eight medallions showing the arms of Britain, Scotland, England and Ireland and another four connected with Edinburgh were gilded. In medieval times the Mercat Cross was the focus for trade, and there's probably been a cross on this site since the 12th century. Public festivities took place here, royal proclamations were read, and executions performed. In 1513 the troops set out from here on the fateful march to defeat at the Battle of Flodden.
