Cowgate
(
Worth Seeing
)
The long gloomy street called the Cowgate runs canyon-like beneath the South and George IV bridges, and connects The Grassmarket
with the Canongate area of the Old Town. Through here, in medieval times, cattle were driven from the plots behind the High
Street houses to pasture outside the walls. By 1500 the Cowgate had become Edinburgh's first fashionable suburb, lined with
the houses of rich merchants and the aristocracy. Centuries later, it housed Edinburgh's large Irish community and was home
to the city's breweries. Look out for St Cecilia's Hall; built in 1763, this was the city's first concert venue. The Holyrood
Project, a massive development scheme comprising the new Scottish Parliament and other buildings, and the opening of new bars
and clubs are together revitalising this area.
