The Grassmarket
(
Highly Recommended
)
Crouched below the Castle Rock, the long open space known as The Grassmarket is one of old Edinburgh's most attractive squares.
With its cobbled pavement and groups of trees, it's often likened to a French place, and makes a pleasant place to pause for
a little window-shopping and a drink at one of its bars or pubs. It was first chartered as a market in 1477 and served for
more than 300 years as the city's main corn and live-stock market, besides being the site of the common gibbet. The Covenanters'
Memorial commemorates the many citizens who were hanged here during the religious upheavals of the 17th century. The Grassmarket
has been considerably smartened up in recent years, but still manages to retain something of the atmosphere Robert Burns must
have felt when he wrote Ae Fond Kiss in the White Hart Inn.
