Specifically designed by Robert Adam in 1774 to house the national archives, Register House still fulfils that purpose today. The domed rectangular building, considered to be Edinburgh's finest neo-classical structure, contains a plethora of documents of national importance. If you want to trace Scottish forebears, start here; the records are open to everyone, the staff are helpful and you can pick up a copy of Tracing Scottish Local History to help you find your way around. Further registers are held in West Register House in Charlotte Square.
