The temporary home of the Scottish Parliament, the Assembly Hall was designed by David Bryce and built between 1858 and 1859 to house the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, a splinter group that broke away from the established Church of Scotland in 1843. The complex was deliberately designed to frame the spire of the Tolbooth Church behind, while the gatehouse towers are sited on the axis of the Royal Academy further down the Mound.
