Lady Stair's House, The Writers' Museum

( Worth Seeing )

Duck through the narrow entrance of Lady Stair's Close and you'll emerge in an enclosed square, surrounded by high tenements. Robert Burns stayed here during his first visit to Edinburgh, an attractive thought for visitors to the Writer's Museum, which occupies a three-storey house on the Close. The mansion dates from 1622, and was built by a wealthy merchant whose daughter made it over to Lady Stair in 1719. (Lady Stair was the widow of the judge and Secretary of State John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair, who was held largely responsible for the massacre of Glencoe.) The museum is devoted to Scotland's great trio - Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. There's much well-presented information on the lives and works of these writers in the form of memorabilia, documents and pictures, with sound guides to help you make the most of your visit. The museum also stages temporary exhibitions on different aspects of the writers' lives.
