Charlotte Square, named after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, was designed by Robert Adam in 1791 as part of the First New Town. This triumphant and harmonious example of symmetrical architecture, with its central garden, was planned to balance St Andrew Square at the other end of George Street. The north and south sides of the square present an unbroken façade which hides the blocks' 11 individual houses. The west side is occupied by West Register House, originally St George's Church, an impressive porticoed building topped by a cupola. The square was intended for residential purposes, though today many of the buildings house offices. If you want a glimpse of 18th-century life head for the Georgian House on the north side.
