Parliament House
(
Worth Seeing
)
From 1639 until the Treaty of Union in 1707 the Scots Parliament met in Parliament House, a superb 17th-century Scottish Renaissance
building just behind St Giles Cathedral. The long and lofty main chamber, Parliament Hall, was home to the `Three Estates'
- no distinction was made in Scotland between clergy, nobility and burgesses. The Scottish MPs processed from here in July
1999 before the opening of the new Scottish Parliament. The hall has a magnificent hammerbeam roof and a fine 19th-century
stained-glass window. The building is now occupied by law courts and advocates' chambers, and there's an interesting display
on its history and present use.
