Blackford Hill
(
Worth Seeing
)
Blackford Hill, south of the city centre, is seen at its best on uncrowded weekdays, and is a good place to head for an afternoon's
fresh air and exercise and some splendid city views. Its 164m summit is an easy climb from the surrounding parkland, up grassy
slopes covered with bright yellow gorse. From here, the green southern suburbs stretch north, with Arthur's Seat over to the
right and Edinburgh Castle ahead. You'll also find the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill. Head downhill to the wooded path
that winds beside the Braid Burn to a castellated 18th-century villa known as the Hermitage of Braid. It is now a countryside
information centre which will fill you in on the surprisingly wide range of wildlife to be found in the area.
