The Tron Kirk
(
Highly Recommended
)
Christ's Kirk at the Tron, a fine Palladian-Gothic church built between 1637 and 1663, got its name from the salt-tron, a
public weighbeam, which stood outside. In 1785, the south aisle was demolished to make room for the bridges linking the Old
and New Towns. Closed for worship since 1952, the Tron now houses the Old Town Information Centre, which will fill you in
on what to do and where to go in and around the Royal Mile. It also has excellent displays on Old Town history. You can see
the remains of Marlin's Wynd inside the Tron; this 16th-century street was destroyed to make room for the church, and only
excavated in the 1970s.
