Edinburgh's financial heart, St Andrew Square, lies at the east end of George Street, and was designed to act as the architectural counterbalance to Charlotte Square at the west end. Its design, dating from 1767, is not as instantly pleasing, but many of its features are older than they look. The grandiose mansion on the east side, built in 1772 for Sir Laurence Dundas, now houses the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland; another Dundas, Henry, 1st Earl of Melville, surveys much of the New Town from the top of the 41m column in the centre of the square. Many of Edinburgh's trendier bars lie in or near the square.
