Crouched in the shadow of Arthur's Seat, the ancient settlement of Duddingston is one of Edinburgh's most attractive corners. Its pretty streets run down to Duddingston Loch, now part of a bird sanctuary and always thronged with geese and other wildfowl. This is the loch purportedly featured in the National Gallery's famous picture of the Reverend Walker skating. Duddingston Kirk is a 12th-century foundation, still retaining its Norman doorway and beautifully set in a verdant churchyard. Take time to wander around before heading for a drink in the Sheep's Heid Inn, dating from at least 1580 when it was patronised by James VI; it has the oldest skittle alley in Scotland.
