Gladstone's Land
( Highly Recommended ) Gladstone's Land, a narrow, six-storey arcaded building and Edinburgh's finest surviving high-storey tenement, was purchased in 1617 by Thomas Gledstanes, a merchant and burgess. He was a prosperous man, with enough money both to buy and decorate this sizeable and prestigiously sited building. Gledstanes remodelled the house, using the arcaded ground floor as a shop, and letting all but one of the other floors, which he retained for his own use. Today, the ground-floor booths display 17th-century wares, while the first-floor rooms are furnished as the typical home of a wealthy citizen of that time. The main bedroom has a beautiful painted ceiling, decorated with fruit and flowers, and traces of the original frescoes which were painted on the walls.
