Museum of Childhood

( Do not miss )

The Museum of Childhood is a delight, its five galleries crammed with everything from trainsets and tiddlywinks to teddies and tricycles. It started life in 1955 as the brainchild of town councillor Patrick Murray, who, right from the start, set his own distinctive mark on the vast range of exhibits - many of the quirky and informative labels were written by him. Apart from the huge collection of toys from all over the world, many of them very old indeed, there are sections devoted to children's clothes, books, education, food and medicine. You can watch re-runs of old cartoons, listen to playground songs and children chanting multiplication tables and admire some truly palatial dolls' houses. The galleries constantly echo with the cry `I remember that' as grannies, mums and kids rediscover the joys and pains of childhood.
