Craigmillar Castle
(
Do not miss
)
You'll have to brave some of Edinburgh's poorer housing schemes to reach Craigmillar Castle, one of Scotland's most impressive
medieval remains, standing in fields on the southeast side of the city. The L-plan tower dates from the mid to late 15th century
and stands in a courtyard surrounded by curtain walls complete with massive corner towers. The castle was a favourite with
Mary, Queen of Scots, and one of the two barrel-vaulted chambers is known as Queen Mary's Room. She fled to Craigmillar, `wishing
herself dead', after the murder of her secretary and favourite David Rizzio at Holyrood in 1566. Craigmillar later passed
to the Gilmour family, who placed it in state care in 1946. Most children enjoy its empty spaces more than the packed precincts
of Edinburgh's other, more famous castle.
