The Royal Yacht Britannia
( Do not miss ) In 1953 the ocean-going Royal Yacht Britannia was launched on Clydebank, built to the highest specifications of the day. She remained in service for over 40 years, travelling more than a million miles to every corner of the world on voyages that included 968 official and state visits, family holidays and royal honeymoons. For the Queen and her family Britannia was `home', a place to work, entertain and relax. Now fully restored and moored at Leith, Britannia still contains the fittings, furnishings, paintings and photographs from her working days. Tours start in the visitor centre, where exhibits and film tell the yacht's story. From here visitors follow a route round the yacht with an audio handset, whose soundtrack explains the different areas on show. These include the bridge, the Queen's bedroom and sitting room, the splendid dining room, the decks and the engine room.
