Assembly Rooms

( Worth Seeing )

Even if you're not attending a concert, the Assembly Rooms, opened in 1787, are well worth a quick visit. The plain façade, with its massive 1818 portico, leads to a series of elegantly proportioned rooms planned for equally elegant social occasions. The ballroom, 28m long and over 13m wide, is lit by dazzling chandeliers; the music hall, even larger, is equally impressive. Since the 1940s the Assembly Rooms have been a key festival venue.
