The Water of Leith
( Highly Recommended ) The Water of Leith runs for more than 32km (20 miles) through a string of suburbs and Edinburgh itself to reach the Firth of Forth at Leith. Most of its course is a gentle meander, with more dramatic scenery at Dean, where the water has carved its way through a deep gorge. For hundreds of years the banks were lined with mills, with up to 80 on the bottom stretch in the early 1800s. A 21-km (13-mile) walkway follows the path of the river from Balerno to Leith, a good way to explore the area. The nicest stretch by far centres around Stockbridge; this agreeable walk gives access upriver to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and downstream to the Royal Botanic Garden. Alternatively, follow the last stages of the Water through Leith, where you'll see some 17th- and 18th-century warehouses and merchants' houses near the Water's end at the docks.
